aakashave beeLali mele - nyaayave devaru

What would be nice is to have
(a) the wording in English script, so that non-kannadigas can read. I read kannada (though it's not my mother tongue), but read english more swiftly; and (b) the translation into English. Some of these old songs are so beautiful, they are almost poetic and it's a shame not to open them to a wider audience.

Here is an attempt to translate this beautiful Kannada poetry to English.
In case someone non-Indian embarks on this blog it will help to know the Indian psyche. The last part of this song is purely in an Indian context. In India we still attribute a lot of respect for the Hindu custom of marriage which is to take oath for a commitment to the marital relationship in presence of fire (God) and the couple takes seven steps called “Saptapadi” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saptapadi )
I am not a linguistic expert, and the experts say English for instance is a richer language than most other languages, however the finest nuances of certain innately Indian aspects depicted in this song is difficult for me to translate into English. Words like saptapadi, and torana do not have any English equivalent.
The setting is on a scenic location on the banks of a river; the song is a rendition by the male singer to his female love (you see, this song was recorded in an age where political correctness towards LGBT was not an issue)
Ninna-vanuu
Let even the firmament collapse on us, I am forever yours
Bidday-Nuu
Let the earth LOOSEN its GRIP and open up as in a quake below our feet right now, I will still NOT LOOSEN my GRIP on your hands because I more than care for you
ನೀನಿರುವುದೇ Nee-niru-woo-dhay ನನಗಾಗಿ nana-gaa-gee
Your existence is fruitful with the goal of living together with me in love, lifelong
ಈ EE ಜೀವ G-va ನಿನಗಾಗಿ Nanaga-gi
and in turn my body and soul are dedicated to your life
Why do you have a fretful angst look on your face, come off it as I am your comrade
Ba-roo-way
I shall join you on this new journey of life as your partner
Munna-day-way
Be it a thorns or prickly stones on our path, I shall be at the forefront (or lead//mixed meaning) to clear them off before you tread
And where you tread I shall create like a bed of flowers made of my love for you
ಈ EE ಮಾತಿಗೆ Maa-tigay ಮನವೇ mana-way ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ sak-she ಈ EE ಭಾಷೆಗೆ bha-shay-gay ದೇವರೇ deva-ray ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ sakshi
Mind, soul and God are the only witness to this vow of mine
Now can you please bring some smile on, you pretty woman

Imagine today, this is the “platform of marriage” ceremony, where we are stood now
Imagine, the leaves on the trees of this raw nature itself is the good-luck beaconing decoration called ‘torana’ for our marriage
Imagine, the chirping sounds of birds is the music played for our wedding ceremony wishing well to the couple
ಈ EE ನದಿಯ nadee-ya ಕಲರವವೇ kalarava-way ಮಂತ್ರಗಳ mantra-gaLa ಘೋಷವು ghosha-vu
Imagine, the sounds of water flowing in the river is the ‘mantra’ which is uttered during the ceremony
Imagine, the steps we are now taking is the ‘Saptapadi’, and the twilight colour of this eve is the ‘arati’ a candle like flame used during any Hindu ceremony
So finally we are now one with our minds and souls in union and THIS IS HEAVEN!

And here is one for the sceptics, Bryan Adams “Heaven” album was released in 1983 and this Kannada song was written in year 1971. Both these songs are indeed my favourites.
